London Taxis or Hackney Carriages have been around for some
time;the name ‘hackney’ as used in hackney coaches and hackney cabs is derived
from the Norman French word ‘Hacquenée’, meaning a horse for hire. The first
record of hackney coaches for hire in London was in 1588; by the 1760s, there
were over a thousand ‘hackney hell carts’ thronging the streets of London. In
1823 the most popular 'London Taxis' were a
two-seat, two-wheeled carriage called a cabriolet; being very popular due to its
speed and comfort; it was from these that the word ‘cab’came. From the mid19th
century two types of 'London Taxis' or cab came to
the fore, the two-wheeled hansom, a fast and elegant carriage; and the ponderous
four-wheeled ‘growler’with its superior luggage carrying ability was found
mainly at railway stations. Some horse cabs or 'London Taxis'
continued to ply for hire into the 1930s but most had gone by 1914.
London Taxis changed to being all motorised when London’s very last horse cab licence was
surrendered on the 3rd April 1947.
The laws governing London Taxis
plying for trade go back nearly four hundred years; being controlled by various
bodies until now; all London Taxis are controlled by
the PCO of TFL( Public Carriage Office of Transport for London). All London Taxi driver's
licences are issued for three years and it is compulsory for all London
Taxi drivers to wear their metal licence number badge
today. Every licensed London Taxi operator has
to display a white plastic licence plate on the boot of their
London Taxi showing the licence number and the number of
passengers they can carry. London Taxis have had
taximeters fitted since 1907; the use of meters is what turned
London Taxis or cabs into
taxicabs. The taximeters calculate the time and distance taken for a
London Taxi journey and being updated all the time they
show the current fare throughout the journey.
